Canterbury School is an independent, coeducational day school, offering a college-preparatory education to students age 2 through Grade 12, and serving families throughout northeast Indiana and counties in northwest Ohio. The school is known in the community for its challenging academic program, student service activities, arts program, all-inclusive athletics program, small class size, talented faculty and family atmosphere. Each year 100 percent of the senior class graduates and enrolls in college.

The school was founded in 1977 by a group of seven families intent on creating an educational program that would better challenge their children. Their vision for the school was to inspire and motivate students while setting high standards for teaching and learning, cultivating an appreciation for the fine arts, and developing foreign language skills in an environment supported by non-denominational Christian values. This remains true today. The school opened with 89 students in Kindergarten through Grade 6. Today the school is organized into four divisions on two campuses: Early Childhood, Lower School, Middle School and High School, and serves more than 1,000 students.

Canterbury’s rigorous academic curriculum is designed to promote curiosity and creativity at every level, encouraging students to reach their potential intellectually, artistically and morally. Daily life is conducted according to an honor code. Acts of kindness, cooperation, and good citizenship receive community recognition. The Canterbury faculty members believe that building a values-based community from the earliest grades creates an atmosphere of inclusion where all students are welcomed in an environment of honesty, charity and respect. Accordingly, central to Canterbury’s mission are its goals to enroll students of diverse talents and backgrounds and to promote the total development of each child in his or her intellectual, physical, social and spiritual growth. We believe the school community and its members are enriched by understanding and respecting the differences and uniqueness in all people. As a result, the school encourages faculty and students to initiate and support programs, practices and curricula that promote the diversity of the world in which we live.
